Where the Heck Do Cashews Come From?

 

Ever wonder where cashews come from?

You might think they grow inside a shell like any other nut,

but there true origins are far more bizarre.

First of all, cashews are not actually nuts, but rather fruit from the cashew tree, a large evergreen tree that thrives in tropical climates.

The tree produces a red flower, which in turn produce yellow and red oval fruits resembling apples.

These so-called cashew apples are very juicy and pulpy, and their juice is often added to tropical fruit drinks.

 

However, cashew apples are not actually fruits in a scientific sense;

The real fruit of the cashew tree is the kidney-shaped formation growing

at the end.

 

 

These fruits, also called drupes, are harvested and become what we

known as a cashew nut.

 

In their raw form, the other layer of the fruit contains multiple toxins, including Anacardic acid, a powerful skin irritant similar to the toxin found in poison ivy that must be removed prior to eating.

 

 

Roasting the cashews destroys the toxins, but roasting must be performed carefully outdoors because the smoke can irritate the lungs, sometimes to a life-threatening degree.

 

 

When they are roasted, cashews change from their natural greenish-gray color to the light brown nut sold in stores.

Next time you crack open a tin of cashews, take a moment to appreciate the long journey those little c-shaped nuts took from the tree to your table!

Ek het die Resep gisteraand gemaak
Maar met gluten vrye meel en suiwel vrye room en dit was heerlik
Ek het dit in ramekin bakkies gesit
Die gewone wit klein een en die die bietjie groter een van Argilla
Ek het dit 3/4 geskep maar Almal het oorgekook ...
MALVAPOEDING IN ‘N KOPPIE
4 Eetl meel,
4 eetlepels suiker,
4 eetl melk,
1 teelepel asyn,
2 teel appelkooskonfyt,
half teel bakpoeier,
half teel koeksoda,
1 eier
knippie sout.

Klits eier en suiker en en gooi die koeksoda by en meng goed voeg die res van die bestandele en meng
Gooi in n koppie of poedingbakkie
Genoeg vir 2
Bak in mikrogolf op hoog vir 3 minute.

SOUS:
4 eetlepels suiker,
1 kop melk,
2 eetlepels margarien
half teelepel vanilla
METODE:
Kook saam en gooi oor die warm poeding.
Om sjokolade malva poeding te maak gooi net n teelepel kakoa by beslag se bestandele en by die sous ook n teelepel kakao
Baie baie lekker

Lemon Honey Butter Tart

Lemon Honey Butter Tart

  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup butter, melted
  • 18 (2 inch) unbaked tart shells

 

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Beat eggs in a large bowl. Stir in brown sugar, honey, lemon juice, lemon zest, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Blend in melted butter. Fill tart shells halfway.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until pastry is golden brown, and filling is set.

Honey Tart

Honey Tart

 

Ingredients

    • 50 g sugar
    • 100 g plain flour
    • 50 g butter
    • cold water, to mix

Filling

    • 200 g cream cheese
    • 2 tablespoons honey
    • 2 eggs
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

  1. Combine sugar and flour.
  2. Add butter cut into small pieces.
  3. Rub together lightly.
  4. Add just enough water to make a firm dough.
  5. Stand aside for 1 hour.
  6. Roll pastry and line a 20cm pie plate.
  7. FILLING.
  8. Blend cream cheese and honey together.
  9. Beat thoroughly with a wooden spoon.
  10. Add eggs and 1/2 the cinnamon, mix again.
  11. Pour unto pastry case.
  12. Baken tart in moderately hot oven 30 -35 minutes.

Einde van die maand tert

Einde-van-die-maand-tert

Beslag
2 eiers
125 ml suiker
60 ml botter of margarien
250 ml melk
180 ml koekmeel
12 ml bakpoeier
Sous
60 ml botter
90 ml heuning

Voorverhit die oond tot 190 °C en smeer ’n oondbak van 30 cm x 15 cm met botter of margarien.

Klits die eiers en suiker goed saam tot liggeel. Verhit intussen die botter en melk saam tot die melk net onder kookpunt en die botter gesmelt is.

Meng die meel en bakpoeier in ’n bak en voeg die eiermengsel daarby. Roer liggies en voeg die melkmengsel by.

Meng tot glad.

Giet in die voorbereide bak en bak vir ongeveer 20 minute tot die kante goudbruin en die tert deurgebak is.

Terwyl die tert bak, verhit die botter en heuning tot kookpunt.

Prik die tert met ’n vurk sodra dit uit die oond kom en giet die heuningstroop oor.

Laat goed intrek en sit louwarm voor. Lewer 8-10 porsies.
